How to disable Protected View Excel – Enabling editing

Opening an Excel file, users may meet Protected View. This happens if the file was downloaded from an unreliable source: the Internet or received by mail. In this case, you will see a system message at the top of the document: “ Be careful – files from the Internet can contain viruses. Unless you need to edit, it’s safer to stay in Protected View“.

Besides the text content, Excel files may contain various macros and scripts, the execution of which can harm the computer. Therefore, opening such documents should be performed at your own risk. And only if you fully trust the source from which the file was downloaded.

In this article, we will take a closer look at how to disable Excel Protected View and enable file editing in full mode.

This instruction is also actual for another MS Office product – Word. The interface for both programs is the same.

Disable Protected View in Excel when opening a file

The easiest and fastest way to enable editing of Excel file which running in Protected View is to give permission by clicking button in the message at the top of the window that appear when opening a file.

How to disable Protected View in Excel:

  1. Open Excel file;
  2. Click “Enable Editing” button in the notification Window at the top of the Excel. It’s placed to the right of the message: “Be careful – files from the Internet can contain viruses. Unless you need to edit, it’s safer to stay in Protected View.”

Cannot open Excel file in Protected View

In some cases, Excel file can’t be open in protected View. First you need to unlock it.

If you cannot open an Excel file in protected mode:

  1. Go to the folder where the file is located;
  2. Click on it with the right mouse button;
  3. Select “Properties” in the context menu;
  4. Activate the checkbox on “Unblock“. It is located at the bottom of the “General” tab;
  5. Click OK to save changes.

Turn off Excel and Word documents checking

In the settings of Word and Excel, you can completely turn off checking for certain types of files. It’s very easy to do this:

  1. Go to the “File” menu;

  2. Select “Options”;

  3. Open “Trust Center” tab;
  4. Go to “Trust Center Settings”;

  5. Open “Protected View” tab;
  6. Uncheck the items:
    • Enable Protected View for files from the Internet;
    • Enable Protected View for files in potentially unsafe locations;
    • Enable Protected View for Outlook Attachments.

  7. Save changes.

Alternatively, you can choose file locations that are considered trusted. Files from such directories will be opened immediately, bypassing Protected View. For this you need to:

  1. Go to the “File” menu;
  2. Open “Options”;
  3. Go to the “Trust Center”;
  4. Go to “Trust Center Settings”;
  5. Open “Trusted Locations” tab;
  6. Click “Add new location”;
  7. Choose the path to the folder;
  8. Activate the checkbox “Subfolders for this location are also trusted“;
  9. Save changes.
